Damon is well known for his horse handling abilities; some call him a “horse whisperer” but he prefers to be recognized as a “Horse Communicator”.

He has researched and examined horses, both in Australia and overseas as a way of developing an innate approach for communicating and working with horses.  As part of  his Communication Through Heart & Soul business, he conducts demonstration, seminars, clinics, and workshops throughout Australia and the United States.  He has traveled broadly within Tasmania, worked on difficult horses, started young horses, and facilitated horse communication with both horse and human.

Damon’s horsemanship and sculptures have grown from his Tasmanian upbringing.  His interest in Tasmanian heritage and the history of horse drawn equipment has prompted his creation of a distinct type of iron sculpture work utilizing farming implements of a by gone era.

“My strong feelings of our unique culture have grown inside my heart and soul. I believe they must be shared with all people and horses I meet." says Damon.
“Tasmania’s history has provided its present. I feel we need to return and acknowledge our past; to reconnect the tools of yesterday to be seen through a different form of beauty, linked to the spirit of the land.”

Damon's sculptures represent a feeling of belonging to the place we all call Mother Earth. Many materials have been recycled, with some from a by-gone era that have been a part of what makes us today.

The balance of materials and the harmony that they hold within us, create the subject. We all have an artistic side; we see the beauty of shapes, colour, sound, smell, touch and thoughts. Damon tries to deliver that balance from within us.

As he says, "Pleasing shapes, create pleasing thoughts".

Damon Wills: The Horse Communicator

Damon’s grandfather, Charles Gladstone Burnell, was a talented horseman in his own right during the early 1900’s.  By the young age of seventeen Charlie had trained a team of draft horses he used to transport goods and produce along the North West coast of Tasmania.  Later he acquired a prominent dairy in the town of Devonport and used his beloved horses to deliver milk to residents.  Damon was raised in this environment and often helped with the numerous chores of running the dairy.  This entailed handling the horses which were used to pull the carts that were laden down with large cans of milk.  This milk was then delivered by hand in smaller billies by jumping out of the moving cart and depositing them on the front step of homes.

Charlie also became a highly accomplished race horse breeder, trainer and driver.  Later in life he stood for the Parliament supporting his community and country. Many times Damon would visit the local blacksmith shop with his grandfather. These visits inspired his artwork which grew into his Farmyard Fantasia business.

Charlie was killed in a horse related accident but he would have said, “There is no such thing as an accident”.  His grandfather left a firm impression on Damon which has remained within him.  This includes his passion for horses and also a deep  understanding of the simple pleasures life offers;  the air we breath, the wind and rain  we feel, the sun with its energy from above, the life that we are all a part of.  Charlie was a philosopher and man of wisdom who openly shared his love and knowledge with his grandson.
